As she approaches her gender-affirming surgery date, exotic dancer Nisha starts experiencing strange visions and violent reactions that cause her to reconsider her decision and explore what it is she really wants. Becoming increasingly worried about the troubling warning signs she keeps seeing, Nisha’s grasp on reality starts to slip – and when a striptease at a bachelor party turns violent, her fears turn into a physical manifestation that delivers rage and revenge in equal, bloody parts.
This was absolutely fantastic! Director David-Jan Bronsgeest lights everything with gorgeous neon, Inaya Zarakhel is captivating as Nisha, and the on screen terror (of both the supernatural and of other humans) is palpable. A great mix of body horror and the horror gender dysphoria, in a way I definitely haven’t seen before.
BINARY screened together with WITTE WIEVEN as part of Fantastic Fest’s Koolhoven Presenteert Program, which showcases films by talented, upcoming Dutch genre film directors.
