Fearing for her and her sons’ lives, Magpie poisons her abusive husband and makes it look like a gruesome murder has occurred to cover her tracks. When the isolated church community she lives in discovers the body, whispered rumors about a beast that lives in the forest spread.
As more men are killed, Magpie’s rebellious attitude makes her a target for accusations of witchcraft. Things get even more complicated when the town’s controlling Pastor — who is Magpie’s father – gets involved.
It’s no surprise that this god-fearing, hard working religious group is harboring a lot of BIG secrets! Darker things than claw-handed demons lurk in many of the houses, and repressed sexuality is a common theme.
There’s a lot of classic cult-y goodness here, but Director Dean Puckett sets SUN apart from the usual by blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, and showcasing some really glorious — and splatter-y — bloodletting. The cast is also solid: Toby Stephens is perfectly cast as the Pastor; Emma Appleton is brilliant as Magpie, and they’re both supported by skilled performers. A tight 90 that’s worth your time.
