FANTASTIC FEST ’25 REVIEW – MOTHER OF FLIES

Toby Poser as Solveig in “Mother of Flies”

It’s no secret that I am a HUGE fan of all things the Adams family does, so I was very much anticipating their latest – and MOTHER OF FLIES did not let me down.

After being diagnosed with a terminal illness, Mickey (Zelda Adams) convinces her father (John Adams) to take her deep into the woods to try an unorthodox treatment by a reclusive healer named Solveig (Toby Poser) as her last resort, and her last chance to grasp at life.

Despite her father’s skepticism, Mickey submits to brutal rites of magic performed by Solveig, each one darker than the last – and each one cracking open long-buried secrets and dissolving the line between the living and the dead.

Written and Directed by Zelda Adams, John Adams & Toby Poser – MOTHER OF FLIES is the Adams’ most beautifully disturbing film yet! From its gloriously bloody opening to its stunning end reveal, this film is:

A poetic meditation on decay, disease, desperation, and healing
A magical forest wonderland of ritual, faith, and blood
An absolutely gorgeous piece of art created with pure, creative love.

Toby is, of course, AMAZING as Supreme witch Solveig, delivering heartbreakingly, almost musical* narrative monologs over scenes of lush, sweeping nature shots. John is perfect at showing his loving protectiveness for his daughter, and Zelda as Mickey gives us an expert range of emotions throughout the film. And Lulu Adams has an important cameo.

Just. Go. See. IT. As soon as you possibly can!

*Speaking of music, though the score relies heavily on nature sounds (as it should, and also: I WOULD LIKE TO SLEEP IN A BED OF MOSS AND TWIGS IN A FOREST BEDROOM ASAFP), we still get a treat to some H6LLBND6R music mixed in – the family’s band, which I adore! They make songs that feed my restless soul.

As always, I’m in awe of the Adams Family’s ability to do ALL THE THINGS. I’m their number one fan, and I don’t mean that in an Annie Wilkes kind of way (or do I?).

MOTHER OF FLIES is currently playing at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
