When a raging wildfire tears through the Hollywood Hills knocking out the power and blocking roads, a fractured family (Justin Long, Kate Bosworth, and Mila Harris) find themselves trapped in their house by a pack of starving coyotes determined to find the weakest prey.
I really loved Director Colin Minihan’s WHAT KEEPS YOU ALIVE, so I was looking forward to this one! COYOTES is much more over-the-top and comedic in tone, skewering Hollywood and poking fun at overworked screenwriters and the pursuit of “getting ahead” – including a stereotypical coked-out Producer living next door (Norbert Leo Butz) and his disaffected lady friend? Wife? Side piece? Julie (Brittany Allen, who is really fantastic in this, and also starred in ALIVE).
There are some really funny moments in this, including a scene with Justin bearing his soul to his wife, admitting he’s been absent and wants to work to bring his family back together again – which Kate doesn’t hear. And the coyote attacks are pretty gnarly, though the coyotes themselves looked a bit … off. (intentionally, I’m assuming).
This is a great ride, but it’s definitely one you want to see in a theater with a big crowd so you can laugh all together at every exaggerated, ridiculous bit. Bosworth yelling, “Get the fuck off my husband!” at the pack was an A++ moment!
COYOTES is currently playing at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
