FANTASTIC FEST ’25 REVIEW – BAD HAIRCUT

Somewhere in-between 80’s teen movies and later serial killer epics lies BAD HAIRCUT: a delirious horror-comedy that takes the barber’s chair to absurd heights.

In order to help boost his confidence, Billy’s friends take him to the local barber shop run by Mick for “the best haircut in town.” Armed with “Mr Snips,” Mick starts crafting Billy’s perfect coif, but things go awry the second his friends bail on him and he’s left alone with Mick. At first the barber’s eccentric behavior seems like a fun quirk – but things go rapidly downhill once an assassin shows up.

The film is unhinged in the best way, and the needle drops are pure joy. Where else are you going to hear “Everybody Wants You,” “Rock Me Amadeus,” “Hungry Eyes” (in a surprisingly tender moment), “You Sexy Thing”, “Prisoner of Your Love,” and the ultimate climax scored to Heart’s “Alone?” The soundtrack is both ironic and weirdly perfect.

And the cast! Frankie Ray is a standout as Mick, balancing manic energy with genuine menace – wearing a whole VIBE in addition to his flamboyant costume choices. While Billy (Spencer Harrison Levin) stumbles through the madness with an authentic mix of fear and bravery; you’re definitely rooting for this guy.

What really sold BAD HAIRCUT to me was its ability to blend gleeful gore and offbeat comedy, with enough sincerity to make you care. The short post-credit sequence is the final wink to the audience, and I’ve no doubt HAIRCUT will make it into the “cult classic” canon.

BAD HAIRCUT is currently playing at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
