In The Serpent’s Skin, we follow Anna (Alexandra McVicker) who leaves her small, transphobic hometown to start a new life in the city with her sister. When Anna is able to repel a would-be attacker with witchy abilities, her powers reach out across the veil to Gen (Avalon Fast – the writer/director of Camp, one of my favorite horror films in 2025), who appears first in visions, then in real life. Their magical bond turns into a soulful romance – which is threatened when Gen accidentally unleashes a soul-sucking demon in Danny (Jordan Dulieu), the resident male hottie.
This film has such BIG VIBES! There are hints of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed here that lovingly influence its original story. The beauty of Alexandra and Avalon together is a truly magnetic force. I could not keep my eyes off of them, and I was fully drawn into their mystical connection.
Alice Maio Mackay delivers a twisty, magical tale full of queer love, practical effects, and a bold aesthetic. And I LOVED IT. Having only seen one other film by her (Satranic Panic), I am anxious to seek out the others! Her voice is a welcome and refreshing one — introducing us to new worlds that evoke 90s nostalgia through a stunning queer lens.

The Serpent’s Skin will be screening in select theaters starting Friday, March 27th.
